Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that treats spider veins. This procedure is the treatment of choice for small spider veins and has been used since the 1930s.

At Galleria Aesthetics, Dr. Marjon Monfared injects your problem veins with a sclerosing agent called Asclera®. The solution irritates your blood vessel, causing it to shut down. Over time, the vessel disappears from view.

Why is sclerotherapy done?

Sclerotherapy injections reduce the appearance of unsightly spider veins. Additionally, this treatment can reduce unpleasant symptoms of spider veins including:

  • Aching
  • Swelling
  • Night cramps
  • Cosmetic concerns

What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy may create minor side effects at the injection site, including:

  • Bruising
  • Red bumps
  • Skin irritation
  • Dark spots

Side effects typically fade within a few days to several weeks, but they may last longer.

Who is a good candidate for sclerotherapy?

If you have spider veins you wish would disappear, you may be a candidate for sclerotherapy. Pregnant women are not eligible for sclerotherapy treatments.

Before your treatment, Dr. Marjon Monfared evaluates your condition to make sure sclerotherapy is right for you. If not, you may want to consider laser vein treatments at Galleria Aesthetics instead.

What should I expect from a sclerotherapy procedure?

First, Dr. Monfared cleans the treatment area with alcohol to avoid infection. Then, he injects the solution directly into the appropriate vein with a very fine needle.

The solution causes your blood vessel to swell shut, preventing blood from entering. Eventually, this vessel becomes scar tissue and fades from view.

Sclerotherapy is a generally painless procedure, but you may feel a slight stinging or cramping sensation during the injection. After withdrawing the needle, Dr. Monfared gently massages the treatment area and applies a compression pad.

You should be able to get up, walk around, and return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. You may need to wear compression stockings or bandages for about two weeks to maintain gentle pressure on the treated veins.

If you’re ready to say goodbye to burdensome spider veins, call Galleria Aesthetics or book an appointment online today.
